Amisha is grand daughter of Rajni Patel, famous lawyer and former justice. Amisha is a combination of her parents' name, Amit and Asha. Her elder brother Asmit Patel is also a film actor. After graduation she worked for a finance company and did occasional modeling. She joined Satyadev Dubey's theater and started acting in plays. Rakesh Roshan first met her in a family party and signed her for "Kaho Na Pyar Hai" opposite his son, Hrithik Roshan. The film was the biggest blockbuster of the year and Amisha became a star overnight. Then she did many films, but all were unsuccessful except "Gadar: Ek Prem Katha". "Gadar...." was a super hit film and gave a new boost to her career in acting. She won many awards for her performance in "Gadar....." . Besides acting in Hindi films, she did few Telugu films.

She has strained relations with her parents and she accuses them of swindling her finances.

She was linked to Bunty Walia before her live-in relationship with director Vikram Bhatt.
